Attestation basically is a testimony by a person of authority that the document and the signature on the document is official or real. For example a document attested by the Canadian ministry of foreign affairs will then be attested by the embassy to ensure the authenticity of the foreign affairs signature. Attestation of docuemnts is widely used by the embassies for processes of legalization and authentication of documents.
Authentication of document in Canada means having your original document or a notorized copy of it stamped by the authentication and legalization section of the department of foreign affairs Canada. Recently they renamed it Global Affairs Canada. That will make your document recognized internationally.
Authentication is a certification of the genuineness of the signature and seal or the position of an official who has the authority to execute, issue, or certify a document so that a document executed, issued or certified in one jurisdiction may be recognized in another jurisdiction. Authentications do not certify the genuineness, legality or credibility of the documents or their contents.
Global Affairs Canada formerly (DFAIT) authenticate documents for the public for a wide range of documents. A Canadian public document can be authenticated by confirming that a Canadian public official’s signature, seal or stamp on the document is genuine by Global affairs Canada using Visaenterprises authentication/ legalization services for efficiency and quick turn over times.
No, both are the same. Which means that authentication/ legalization of document in Canada means having your original document or a notorized copy of it stamped by the authentication and legalization section of the department of foreign affairs Canada. Recently they renamed it Global Affairs Canada. That will make your document recognized internationally.
Is the same ministry of foreign affairs that has changed its name three times in recent history. Global Affairs Canada used to be called the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) then the name was changed to Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) and is now renamed Global Affairs Canada.
What is of concern to us is the JLAC section of Global Affairs Canada that is responsible for authentication and service of documents.
JLAC is the Authentication and Service of Documents Section of Global Affairs Canada. It is the Authentication and Service of Documents Section (JLAC).
To have a document notarized, a Lawyer/Notary Public or Commissioner of Oaths must witness the signing of the document such as power of Attorney however some documents such as corporate or professional memberships can be accesed online so the lawyer or the notary will verify the authenticity of the document. The Notary Public or Commissioner of Oaths will place their signature and stamp on the document, certifying that they have witnessed the signature and verified the identify of the parties involved. A Notary Public or Commissioner of Oaths can also make a Certified True Copy of your original document.
Yes, Documents originating in a foreign country can be authintacated, legalized or attested by Global Affairs Canada by the following requirements:
- Documents that originate in a foreign country must be signed and sealed by an official of that country’s embassy, high commission or consulate accredited to Canada. Please ensure that the signatory’s name is printed in the Latin (western) alphabet.
- However, if a translation is required of these documents by the recipient institution, it must be certified appropriately by both a certified Canadian translator and Canadian public notary or Commissioner of Oaths.
The authentication of docuents is calculated by how many stamps you require. Thus if you have 3 identical copies of a birth certificate and you want to attest all of them at the embassy of UAE then you will require 3 payments as they charge per stamp.

That to be used in Columbia or Venezuela must be written in Spanish, so therefore the power of attorney must be translated into English or French by a Canadian certified translator and then stamped by a notary before sending it to Global Affairs Canada for authentication.
