Does your document need to be authenticated?
Authentication requirements differ from country to country. Before sending your documents to be authenticated, please search our website, then contact us to obtain updated legalization, authentication, attestation and apostille information for your Canadian document attestation at the embassy of Germany at consulate general in Toronto Canada.

Legalization of Canadian birth, marriage and death certificates issued by Vital Statistics
Canadian civil status certificates (e.g. birth, marriage or death certificates) issued by Vital Statistics need to be authenticated by the competent Canadian authority prior to the legalization by the German Consulate Toronto.
Please inquire with the German authority that they are intended for, whether they require the short form or long form of the document to be legalized. Mostly, the ‘long form’ is required as it contains more information. Only original documents can be legalized.

1st step: Acquisition of the authentication at the competent Canadian authority
Which one is the competent Canadian authority?
General requirements to legalize documents in embassy of Ecuador in Ottawa Canada:
1. The document must be an original document and not a certified copy.
2. It must be stamped by Global Affairs Canada (Ex DFATD).
3. Document with handwritten signature only accepted, please advise the authentication office that the authentication is for the German Consulate in Toronto and ask for a handwritten signature. Please be aware that a certificate of authentication without a handwritten signature cannot be legalized at Germany Consulate in Canada.
4. Authentication fee for Germany consulate are as follows: $37 per document for Birth, Marriage, Death certificate all other document or certificate for $66 per document, including Documents that were signed in front of a Canadian notary public or lawyer, Canadian tribunal documents, Canadian university diplomas or degrees and Canadian certificate of good conduct (police clearance certificate).
5. Submit a cover letter for your application, including with your name, address, phone number and/or email address (in case that we have any further questions)
6. Processing time for legalizations of Canadian document at Germany consulate is about seven days.
7. The consular section has the right to ask for additional documentations or requirements.
Legalization of signatures of or documents issued by Canadian Lawyers or Notaries Public
The German Consulate Toronto offers legalization for documents, contracts or certified signatures that have been managed by a Notary Public or Lawyer in Canada and for which a German authority requires further legalization.
These documents need to be authenticated first by the competent authority in the Province prior to the legalization or Global Affairs Canada (Ex DFATD).
